Leek grew on the silk trade, and many of its streets are lined with Victorian mill-town terraces in red brick and local stone. Those roofs are well over a century old, and the hilltop setting means wind-driven rain and hard frosts work at every weak spot: loose tiles, open mortar joints and gable verges that have started to crumble.

Frost is the big one for brickwork. Water gets into soft or cracked mortar, freezes, expands and pushes it out, which is why repointing is such a common job up here. We use a mortar that suits the age of the property, including lime mortar on older brick and stone where it’s needed.

What Moorlands Weather Does to a Roof

Most of the jobs we’re called to in Leek come back to the same thing: exposure. Here’s what we see and how we deal with it.

Slipped and Lifted Tiles

Strong gusts get under loose tiles and slates and lift them out of line. We refix or replace them and check the felt and battens underneath. More on roof repairs.

Crumbling Gable Verges

Mortar along the gable edge takes the full force of the weather and is often the first thing to fail. Dry verge caps clip on in its place and need no mortar at all.

Frost-Damaged Mortar

Open joints let water into the wall, and every hard frost makes it worse. We rake out and renew failing mortar with house repointing, matched to the age of the building.

Gutters Full of Moss

Damp, shaded roofs grow moss fast and it ends up in the gutters. Regular gutter cleaning stops overflows, and we repair or replace joints split by ice.

Rotten Timber Fascias

Painted timber boards don’t last long in wet, exposed spots. We replace them with uPVC fascias and soffits that never need painting.

Worn-Out Roofs

When a roof has had too many patch repairs, a new roof can be the cheaper option in the long run. We’ll give you an honest view either way.

FAQ

Leek Roofing Questions Answered

Anything else? Just give us a call on 07351 639478.

  • Do you cover Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands?

Yes. We’re based in Tunstall, around 25 minutes from Leek along the A53, and we cover the town and surrounding villages including Cheddleton, Endon, Longsdon, Rudyard, Horton, Meerbrook, Upper Hulme, Bradnop and Wetley Rocks.

  • Are dry verge caps worth it on an exposed roof?

On exposed roofs they are often the best long-term fix. Mortar verges crack as the roof moves and as frost gets in, and once they start to fail, pieces can fall. Dry verge caps are mechanically fixed, so there is no mortar to crumble and nothing to maintain.

  • Why does mortar wear out faster in Leek?

Mortar is porous. When rain soaks in and then freezes, it expands and breaks the mortar apart a little more each winter. Higher ground means more rain and more frosts, so joints tend to wear out sooner than they would in the city. Repointing seals them again.

  • How often should gutters be cleaned?

Once a year is enough for most homes, ideally in late autumn once the leaves are down. Homes close to trees or with mossy roofs may need cleaning twice a year to stop overflows and damp.

  • Can you come out after a storm?

Yes. If wind has lifted tiles or brought down part of a verge, call us and tell us what you can see. We aim to visit within 24 hours of your call, and we’ll make the roof safe and watertight before anything else.
